How to lose a tan in 3 days

What not to do - if you want your tan to last

Ever feel like your spray tan faded faster than expected? You’re not imagining it — certain habits can absolutely shorten the life of your tan. As a spray tan artist, I see this all the time.

The good news? Once you know what not to do (and what to do instead), your tan can last 7–10 days beautifully.

Let’s break down the fastest ways people accidentally fade their spray tan — and how to avoid them.

Using Harsh or Exfoliating Products

Once your spray tan has developed, your skin needs to be treated gently. Products that are too abrasive or drying can cause your tan to fade faster and unevenly. What shortens the life of your tan:
• Exfoliating body washes or scrubs
• Loofahs, washcloths, or dry brushing
• Soaps with sulfates, alcohol, or strong fragrances

Instead:
After your first rinse, cleanse using your hands and a gentle, hydrating, tan-safe body wash. The goal is to support your skin barrier so your color fades evenly and lasts longer.

Long, Hot Showers

Hot water opens pores and speeds up skin cell turnover — which means your tan fades faster. What shortens tan life:
• Steamy showers
• Long baths
• Hot tubs or saunas

Instead:
Stick to quick, lukewarm showers. Pat skin dry (don’t rub) and moisturize immediately afterward.

Skipping Moisturizer (The Biggest Mistake)

Dry skin sheds faster — and so does your spray tan. What causes uneven fading:
• Forgetting to moisturize daily
• Using lotions with alcohol or heavy fragrance
• Only moisturizing “sometimes”

Instead:
Moisturize daily, morning and night, using a tan-safe, fragrance-free lotion. Bonus tip: hydrate from the inside out. Drinking enough water helps your skin hold onto your tan longer.

Sweating Too Soon

Sweat during the development window can cause streaking and premature fading. What to avoid:
• Workouts before your first rinse
• Tight clothing
• Heat exposure

Instead:
Plan your tan around rest days when possible and wear loose, breathable clothing until after your rinse.

Chlorine, Salt Water & Harsh Chemicals

Pools, ocean water, and certain chemicals can break down your spray tan quickly. What strips color faster:
• Chlorine
• Salt water
• Strong or clarifying soaps

Instead:
Rinse your skin immediately after swimming and moisturize generously.

How to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer

If you want that glow to stick around for as long as possible:
• Prep properly before your appointment
• Rinse exactly when advised
• Moisturize daily
• Avoid exfoliation until your tan naturally fades
• Stay hydrated

A great tan isn’t just about the spray — it’s about the aftercare.
